About Ramadan

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is Ramadan (also known as Ramzan or Ramdan). It is the holy month for the Muslims worldwide where they restrict them selves from eating, drinking, smoking or anything that might corrupt their souls from dawn till sunset for the entire month. Besides, the specially during this month the Muslims show greater sympathy to the needy and poor. Fasting plays a key role in attaining greater concentration on spirituality that paves way to salvation while cleansing the body of over indulgence.

It is also believed that during this month Muslims sacred book holy 'Quran' or 'Koran' was sent to the earth to Prophet Mohammed from Heaven.

Before dawn people have a pre fast meal known as 'Suhoor' and break their fast after sunset known as 'Iftar'. On the evening of 'Laylat-al-Qadr' (The Night of Destiny or Power) which is the 23rd day of the month is a very special day and is believed that on this day all the sins are forgiven and, it is believed that Prophet Mohammed received the first divine revelation of the Holy Quran.

After the end of Ramadan, people celebrate three days holiday known as 'Id-al-Fitr' (means the Feast of Fast Breaking). It is during this time people exchange gifts and get together for a sumptuous meal.
