Ramadan Fasting

During Ramadan, fasting or 'sawm' is an integral part followed by reading Quran and midnight prayers known as 'Taraweeh'. It is believed that the pious Muslims, who follow the month with strict discipline, get rid of their past sins and attain redemption.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islamic virtue and it is done because of deep love 'Allah'. It is compulsory for the adults, sane and able Muslims. Those who avoid it intentionally are considered as sinners or offenders under the Islamic Law.

However, those who are insane, too old to fast, people who are terminally ill or travelers are exempted from fasting. Also nursling mothers, children who have not reached their puberty, pregnant women are also excused.
